WHATCOM FALLS
The Forest's Edge Neighborhood in Bellingham, WA

Ask longtime Bellingham residents where they'd most want to live if they could choose anywhere, and Whatcom Falls comes up often. It's that kind of neighborhood — one that earns genuine affection from the people who live there.
A Bit of History
The name Whatcom comes from the Lummi word "What-Coom," meaning "noisy, rumbling water", and it was the sound of the falls on Whatcom Creek that put Bellingham on the map. In 1852, two California entrepreneurs named Henry Roeder and Russell Peabody came north looking for a waterfall powerful enough to run a lumber mill. A Lummi chief directed them here, and Roeder and Peabody built the first mill at the falls — the founding act of the city itself. The creek and its falls powered industry, attracted settlers, and gave the first permanent town its name. Today Whatcom Falls Park preserves 241 acres around those same falls, and the trails, swimming holes, and stone bridge feel timeless — because in a sense, they are. This is where Bellingham started.
Named for the stunning park at its heart, Whatcom Falls Park is 241 acres of old-growth forest, waterfalls, trails, and even a historic fish hatchery. It's the kind of park that people in other cities would take a weekend trip to visit — here, it's in your backyard. Residents walk or bike into the park before work, on lunch breaks, and on weekend afternoons without a second thought.

It's a quieter, residential feel, without the bustle of nearby commercial corridors.
