FAIRHAVEN
Historic Village Neighborhood in Bellingham, WA

If you've ever dreamed of living somewhere that feels like a small town tucked inside a city, Fairhaven might be your place. This historic village neighborhood sits at Bellingham's southern edge, overlooking Bellingham Bay, and it has a character unlike anywhere else in Whatcom County.
A Bit of History
Fairhaven was founded in 1883 by Daniel Jefferson Harris — better known as "Dirty Dan." A former whaler who arrived on Bellingham Bay in the 1850s, Harris acquired 146 acres that would eventually become Fairhaven's core, and filed the town plat on January 2, 1883. He named it from the Lummi word "see-see-lich-em," meaning "safe port" or "quiet place." The nickname? Even by frontier standards, Harris was notably unkempt — hence "Dirty Dan." His legacy lives on in Harris Avenue, and in the recently reopened Dirty Dan Harris Steakhouse on 11th Street, which closed for two years after a devastating fire damaged the neighboring Terminal Building in December 2023 and has just returned to Fairhaven's dining scene. If you haven't been, it's worth a visit — and now you know who you're toasting.
The architecture here tells a story - Victorian storefronts, brick-lined sidewalks, and craftsman homes that have been lovingly maintained for over a century. Village Books, local coffee shops, and waterfront dining aren't amenities you drive to; they're part of the everyday rhythm of life here. Residents walk to everything, and many of them have been doing it for decades.
Homes in Fairhaven range widely - from charming older cottages and bungalows to condos and newer infill construction with views of the bay. The current median sale price is around $590k*, and condos make up a meaningful portion of the inventory here, which gives buyers at different price points a real path into the neighborhood. For single-family homes and properties with water views, prices climb accordingly. Inventory moves quickly because demand is consistently strong.
What makes Fairhaven special isn't just the aesthetics - it's the sense of community. Neighbors know each other. There are farmers markets, art walks, and events that bring people out year-round. The Interurban Trail and Chuckanut Drive are right in your backyard for hiking, cycling, and one of the most scenic drives in Washington.
Fairhaven is a great fit for buyers who want a walkable, vibrant lifestyle with easy access to both the outdoors and a genuine neighborhood feel. It also appeals to out-of-state relocators looking for that "I can't believe I live here" quality of life.
