SILVER BEACH
Lakeside Community Neighborhood in Bellingham, WA

Silver Beach occupies a special place in Bellingham's neighborhood landscape — a small, close-knit lakeside community on the northeast shore of Lake Whatcom that feels genuinely removed from the pace of the city, even though it isn't far from anything at all.
A Bit of History
Before it was a quiet lakeside neighborhood, Silver Beach was Bellingham's version of Coney Island. In the 1890s, entrepreneurs envisioned a resort community on Lake Whatcom's north shore, starting with the Silver Beach Hotel in 1891 — a 15-room lakeside inn that advertised itself as first-class in every respect. By 1907, a full amusement park called the White City had opened on the grounds, complete with a roller coaster, Ferris wheel, dance pavilion, and a bear pit. On opening day, 10,000 people arrived. A trolley line ran directly from downtown Bellingham to the park's entrance — and for a dime, you could spend the day at the lake. The White City operated for about a decade before fading into history. The hotel eventually closed, the trolley stopped running, and the land quietly became the residential neighborhood it is today. Hardly anyone picnicking at Bloedel Donovan Park realizes they're sitting on what was once the most exciting destination in Whatcom County.
The neighborhood takes its name seriously. Lake Whatcom is Bellingham's primary drinking water reservoir and one of the most beautiful freshwater lakes in Whatcom County, and Silver Beach sits right along its edge. Many homes here have direct lake access, private docks, or sweeping water views that make everyday life feel like a quiet vacation. It's the kind of setting that people who visit once tend to come back to — permanently.

The housing stock in Silver Beach is a mix of original mid-century lake cottages, many of which have been substantially updated or expanded over the years, alongside newer custom homes built to take full advantage of the water views and wooded lots. Properties here tend to have character — you won't find tract housing or cookie-cutter construction. What you will find is a genuine sense of place that's hard to replicate.

The community itself is small and neighborly in the best sense. People know each other here. There's a waterfront park, a boat launch, and a rhythm to neighborhood life that reflects the lakeside setting — unhurried, connected to the outdoors, and deeply Pacific Northwest.

The current median sale price in Silver Beach is around $865k, which reflects the premium that lakeside access and views command in this market. For buyers who have dreamed of living on the water in the Pacific Northwest, Silver Beach is one of the most attainable ways to make that a reality in Bellingham.
